What are Cinacalcet tablets? (Back to top)
CINACALCET (Sensipar™) helps to slow the progression of bone disease in patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis by decreasing the release of hormones from the parathyroid gland. This drug also helps to decrease high calcium blood levels in patients with cancer of the parathyroid gland. Generic cinacalcet tablets are not yet available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•liver disease
•low serum calcium concentrations
•seizure disorder
•an unusual reaction to Cinacalcet, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used? (Back to top)
Take cinacalcet tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not divide the tablets. Avoid taking this medication with grapefruit juice. This medication should be taken with food or shortly after a meal.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with Cinacalcet? (Back to top)
•barbiturates such as phenobarbital
•doxercalciferol
•grapefruit juice
•herbal or dietary supplements such as St. John's wort
•medicines for fungal infections (examples: fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole)
•medicines for HIV infection or AIDS
•medicines for seizures (examples: carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone, zonisamide)
•rifampin, rifapentine, or rifabutin
•some medicines for pain, such as codeine
•some antibiotics (examples: clarithromycin, erythromycin, telithromycin, troleandomycin)
•some medicines for high blood pressure, chest pain, or heart-rhythm problems (examples: amiodarone, diltiazem, verapamil)
•some medicines for depression (examples: amitriptyline, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, nefazodone)
•some medicines for mental problems (examples: clozapine, haloperidol, risperidone, thioridazine)
•zileuton

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from receiving Cinacalcet? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•abdominal cramping or pain
•burning, numbness, pricking, tickling or tingling of the face, lips, tongue, hands or feet
•confusion
•cramps in the back or legs
•depression
•difficulty swallowing or breathing
•hallucinations
•irritability
•muscle spasms of the face
•muscle aches, pains
•seizures or convulsions

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•diarrhea
•nausea
•vomiting

What should I watch for while taking Cinacalcet? (Back to top)
Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. Do not stop taking cinacalcet except on your prescriber's advice. You will receive regular blood tests to check the level of calcium in your blood.

Cinacalcet alters the concentration of calcium in your blood. Tell your prescriber if your are taking any calcium supplements or vitamin or mineral products that contain calcium. Also tell your prescriber if you are taking any products that contain vitamin D. Follow your prescribers advice regarding the use of any vitamin, mineral or dietary supplement product.

Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top)
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
